pearyw Range Report
I have my normal target loads but was wondering if you shot any Jacketed 185 grain .451 and what was your most accurate recipe. I am going to load some 185 Remington Golden Sabers not hopped up hot but full loads and see what they do in the revolver and the carbine. Might try some Unique @ 7.5 grains or some Win 231 @ 6.5 grains and work it up, I have lots of both powders. What do you like/ use ?

Are you talking 45 acp ??

358winchester- 08-20-2007

Yep Craig, 45 ACP from my revolver & carbine not my auto pistols.

I did 6.0 grs. WW231 that worked ok. & 5.5 of Bullseye weren't bad. My Hornady book says 6.3 is max for WW231

For accuracy in a full power load I use either 5.8gr of 231 or 9.2 gr of AA5 with a 185 gr jacketed 45 acp. The AA5 gives a little more velocity with about the same pressure. Don't use Remington brass with any warmer load. I have learned that the hard way.

I tried out the new loads on the range yesterday and found that the 5.7 grains of Win 231 pushing the Remington 185 grain Golden Saber Jacketed Hollow Points where outstanding from the S&W 625 (45ACP) Revolver how ever the carbine shot about three inches high with them , I will have to adjust the red dot to that load. I broke down and shot two mags from the PARA LDA and they where the best group I have ever shot with that auto one ragged hole about an inch high and about the size of a sliver dollar, all 14 rounds. Next week I plan to move the targets out past the ten foot line

231 is hard to beat for accuracy in medium speed loads. 5.7 is a medium load. I load 5.8 gr with 200 lswc for IDPA and IPSC competition to make the power factor requirements. I know I use more 231 than any thing else for 45 acp, 9MM, and 40 S&W lead loads. My second choice is AA5 for guns such as my Glock 30 45 ACP that need more velocity to function properly. I also use it in my 1911 comp gun. It is a 6" barrel in a Springfield slide with a full profile Wilson comp on a 70 series Colt frame. Even with a 13# recoil spring, it take a warmer load to function.
