seeking advise on 45-70
I am asking WHAT YOU USE / THINK :!: :!: I am going to start working on a hunting load for my Ruger #1 in 45-70. I am thinking that the standard load will be a 350 grain hollow point semi-jacketed bullet . but would like to hear what you use to hunt with. I am looking at fifty yard shots on small white tail deer and twenty-five yard shots on wild hogs in the 150 to 300 pound range :!: This is my first 45-70 and I will gladly take all advice into consideration.

Ron, I don't know if the leverevolution bullets themselves are avilable yet they are the ballistic tipped 45/70 loads, but they offer the higest velocity and better accuracy then most of the factory loads. I was going recommend 70 gr of BP & 500 gr cast bullet. It has killed a few buffalo. Here is a good load chart of about every bullet available for the 45/70 http://www.realguns.com/loads/4570.htm

Ron I load 28.7 grs of IMR 2400 with a sierra 300 gr hollow point for hunting, fairly accurate load and devastating to a white tail have not tried it on a hog yet. I fire this out of a Marlin lever gun so it should work fine in your Ruger. Beware it tends to kill on both ends just ask gabob

Thank you hardball I will keep that one in mind. All the bullets I have are 350 & 400 grain and I was given / traded for about 400 so I will use these up first.

If you are not too recoil sensitive, try 59 gr of 3031 with the 350 gr. It will drive a 350gr about 2150 fps. It will sure kill a deer. I use to shoot hot loads in my Marlin, but I got tired of turning my shoulder black and blue.

My #1 will not shoot 300 grainers, loves 405 grainer with IMR 3031 don't remember the amount, but ifn your interested let me know and I'll go get my book. I had to put a Hicks accuciser in it before it would shoot true.
