Smith and Wesson Question
When they refer to the Model 28 Highway Patrolman 2 what does the 2 stand for?

njretcop- 11-11-2007

It is the cheaper verison of the Model 28........honest, no joke, it was made so LEO's could afford one.

Pabooger- 11-11-2007

I thought the 28 was the cheaper version of the 27. The 2 might have something to do with a design change of some sort???

njretcop- 11-11-2007

It's missing a few features of the 28........for one thing, it's blued, but not polished.

jjmitchell60- 11-11-2007

The 28-2 means that it is the 2nd series in the model. Anytimne S&W puts a -2,3,4,... after the model number it is a series change which means some feature is different than tehone before. ONE that you will see with as high as a -6 is the model 10 and the 629. There are other models that have high -# but those 2 I have seen and onwed. Always remember that a model #-# means that the last # is the newer of the models and it has had that many changes over the years. This comes straight out of the Blue Book.

S&W N frames, -2 Cylinder stop changed, hole in front of trigger guard eliminated, happens in 1961 These are cost saving, or improvement measures. All models started without a dash # in 1957.

Thanks Rich I new someone had the answer!!!

njretcop- 11-16-2007

I gave you the answer above.....

Pabooger- 11-16-2007

No ya didn't!!! The 28 is a cheaper version of the 27, the 2 had nothing to do with that. The 2 was the change made that Rich commented on!!!

I have a 28-2 4"I don't think a 27 could shoot any better. But it does shoot better than my 19 :D :D :D :D :D :D

njretcop- 11-16-2007

Wrong my friend. The 28-2 was unique in S&W history in that the change was made not to improve the product, but rather that LEO's could more easily afford to own one. It was the only gun in their history that this was done for.....it doesn't mean the gun isn't as good, the things they changed did not effect the shooting qualities of the weapon. Write to, or call S&W to see if this info is not correct........

I sure like the little Rossi Snubby I got from you!!!! Great little gun!!!

You can confirm what I told you by writing to: Mr. Roy Jinks Smith & Wesson PO Box 2208 Springfield, MA 01102

Im not arguing that the Smith 28 is not a cheaper version of the 27, it is just that, mechanically the same, all Im saying is that the 2 was added to note the removal of the hole in the trigger guard. It is the cheaper verison of the Model 28........honest, no joke, it was made so LEO's could afford one. You said the 28-2 was a cheaper version of the 28, see the quote above!! Here is some info about the changes made Model 20,21,22,23,24,25 (except 25-5) 26,27,28,29 -1 1960 Change to LH thread -2 1961 Cylinder stop changed, hole in front of trigger guard eliminated -3 1982 Eliminate cylinder counterbore (magnums only) According to this the Model 2 was not issued until 1961! The original Model 28 was made in 1954 Correct me if I am wrong!
