I would guess it is either a prototype, or a VERY expensive custom rifle. What kinds of markings does it have ?? Doug

I think those 1903 s were modified for use in aircraft very early in WW1. They were used by the observer in the rear seat prior to the use of machine guns in aircraft. Mark Christian(MTC) can probably give a more definative answer

MTC says that the Air Service 1903s had a 25 round magazine with inspector markings on the magazine. Does this mag have any markings?
