Taxidermy ??
Wife took a deer at Ft. Knox this week end that still had part of its velvet .
She dosen't want to have it mounted but would like to preserve what is left along with the redish color on the horns.
I plan on boiling the skull (not the horns ) .
Any help on this home project ?
John, I would NOT boil it because the steam from the boiling water might remoe the velvet. I would ask a local taxidermist what he would do to remove the hair.skin from skull and not hurt the velvet or the color of the horn. I am suspecting he would suggest a solution of lime and water to do the slipping, just a guess BUT would ask a taxidermist first.
Good thought jj . I will take your advice.
Cleaning skull
Hey John..
My son is doing that to his buck. He's going to the local bait shop and getting some maggets or meal worms. They'll flesh the skull real nice for you. You might have to bag the horns so they don't eat the velvet.
