The 303
I have been surfing the web for 303 Savage ammo for a poor old friend that just can't find him a modern caliber rifle and the 303 British is every where. I have never looked at them closely because I just didn't like the looks of the rifle. But I may have made a mistake there. What do you know about them? Do you shoot yours much? There is a lot of models out there which do you think is the best, why? What are you paying for ammo locally? Now tell me why I should own one :D

I shoot my Enfield all the time. It's a little bit if a kicker. I also hunt with mine. I get my ammo where I work part time, and I pay $16 a box for Remington. I think it sells normally for $20 a box of 20. The ammo used to be real cheap before Remington took all the price increases this year. Sportsmansguide sells 300 rounds for $70. If ammo is a deciding factor in the gun, You would be better off with the Enfield. Dustin

I would reload for it if I owned one.

I would reload for it if I owned one. In an SMLE, the brass doesn't last very long, maybe 2 loadings at full power. Most of the currently available Surplus ammo is total garbage, Pakistani Click-bang stuff. you basically have 4 common choices if you want a 303, P14, Mauser style action, heavy, great accuracy, $250 and up made from 1914 till 1916 or so #1 SMLE, 10 round mag, rear locking action, "V" notch rear sight, used by all the British territorys till the 50's with a few exceptions. $100 and up #4 SMLE, 10 round mag, peep rear sight, Used by GB and Canada for ww2 till the 50's $100 and up $150and up for a Canadian or US made one. #5 SMLE, basically a light little #4 carbine, Shorter barrel, lightening cuts, flashhider, AKA "Jungle Carbine", handy to carry kick like a MUTHA. $225 and up

I consider my SMLE N01 MK 3 to be one of the finest rifles I own. It served the British Empire very well for more than 60 years....... It penetrates rain barrels also

After how many shots did it tale Charlie? As to 303 British, LOTS of it out there so that is why you can find it PLUS teh 303 Savage was a civilian caliber, the 303 British was a military caliber thus a lot more 303 brit made. I have 4 303 brits. My TRUE jungle Carbine, 2 full stocked UNISSUED MKIVs and a MKIII I believe that has been shot a LOT. I also ahve one of the Indian 303 Ishapore 2As chambered in 7.62 NATO which I shoot 308 Win in. It will handle it very well, I had anotehr one that was sporterized that had shot thousands of rounds of 308 BUT a man would nOT take no as an answer as to IF it is for sale, I sold it for enough to buy 2 more!

i have a no.4 mk1* that i have owned since i was a kid, down the road apiece from where i lived was an old country store. they had a barrel in the middle of the room plum full of these old rifles. for 20.00 you could pick one out, with it came as many shells as you could grab with 1 hand. i used my rifle for deer season all my young life. plenty good enough, and it always killed deer dead with 1 shot. i still have it and if the weather is bad during season, ice ,rain, mud sleet, i always take it over any other. it don't seem to care what i put it through, if i do my part to show it a deer, she'll do her part, never fail. wished i had bought more. when you get used to them , you will find you can fire 10 aimed shots in 30 seconds easily. i also have its original bayonet, scabbard, cleaning kit, ammo pouches, stripper clips, and if shtf. my rifle will be beside me until death. :|

I have several 303 Enfields that I hand load for. I mostly load a cast 160 gr gas checked bullet that I cast sized .312" and lubed with Lee liquid Alox. I load these to about 1600 fps with Herco powder. I get good accuracy and case life with these.
