Trip to Dixie Gun Works in Union City TN...
Went to Dixie Gun Works in Union City TN Tuesday and it was a HUGE let down from what it was 20 years ago. Old car museaum is still OK BUT they have out growwn their site plus no one is taking care of what is in it IMHO. Gun show room was a joke IMHO. Lucky IF they have 100 sq ft show room, gone to mostly mail order so nothing is really on display. All the old antique guns, some not antiques, were way over priced. an example was a S&W 36 Chief Special in blue box, NOT FLAT LATCH, was priced at $499, way too high. Carcano 6.5 at $500! An it goes on. Cannon barrels were there and some worth the price but many were not. Had a replica 45/70 gatling gun for 45 K, yes $45,000! 1/2 scale cannon for 7K, just a huge dissapointment over all compared with 20 years ago when they had a LOT of items to see in show room to buy. Did pick up a catalog for the usefull info it contains in the back of it. It is well worth the $5 you pay. Had a good chamber casting method i had not used before and a cheap one. Thye use sulpher. Melt it down in a pan, stop up the gun barrel about 1" above where the rifleing begins at the breech end, pour in liquid sulpher, allow to cool and set up, and take a ram rod o wooden dowel rod and poke the casting out the breech end. Have a perfect cast of teh chamber. Does not harm the metal at all in the barrel.
Over all I advice all to not go to the shop, order a catalog and you have done more than enough. Now if yopu are in Union City TN, stop in and see the cars but do not go out of your way to go IMHO.
JJ,
Wow! You ain't kidding about the prices......
$45,000 for a REPLICA 45/70 I can get a dang M-60 Class III (Full Auto) for that and it ain't a replica.
Or 2 Class III HK-21's
