Watco Danish oil on Walnut gunstock
I'm going to try Watco Danish oil on a Win 94 Walnut stock that I got from Browneslls last week. What I'd like some advice on is if the walnut can be stained to darker brown before the oil is applied to finish it? I just want to duplicate what was proper for the gun originally. The rifle itself is a .32 Win Spec. carbine made about 1930-35.

If the wood is not sealed (with polyurethane or some type varnish) you should be able to stain it with no problem. If it is oil soaked stain may not take well. I have always prefered oil based stains to the water based stains. Give it a try, the worst that can happen is the stain will not penetrate.
