Wm Short Malcolm scope... good.. bad.. ?!?
I see this scope can be mounted on a Marlin 1895 Cowboy (26" octagon barrel) : The scope and data can be found at : http://www.circlekb.com/page/CKCG/PROD/Optics/WM-334151 Does anyone have experience with these scopes.? Good... bad... neither good or bad.. ?!? Reason for asking is.. I bought a fairly cheap Marlin 1895CB in .45/70, with 200 Remington 300-grain cartridges. So to keep the look instead of mounting a "modern" scope with zoom, illuminated recticles and whatnot.. I was wondering about putting on this Wm Short Malcolm-scope. I know it's only fixed 3x magnification.. but that would be sufficient for what I have in mind for the gun. I'm just wondering about the quality of the scope. I also have a Weaver-base and ring set for mounting a more modern 1" scope on the rifle. Please do help me decide... ?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Peter I have not had any dealings with the scope you posted a link to BUT I have a reproduction 6x malcolm made by Leatherwood/Hi-lux for my sharps 45/70. They are a higher prioced but they are longer and I had to have the heavy recoil mount as well as a tube extension for the sharps. I have teh link below so take a look and see if they have a scope for your 95 Marlin. I would HIGHLY reccomend the Leatherwood/Hi/Lux scops. I love mine on my sharops. Hard to sight in being no adjustment except moving the scope right or left by front mount but they are as true a replica as you can find. IF you decide you are interetsed in the ones I posted a link to, let me know because I am direct with Buffalo Arms which is one of their distributers. On that link, scroll down past the M-14s to teh Malcolm scopes. http://www.hi-luxoptics.com/homex-m.html As to the link and the short Malcolms you posted about, I would have some questions and concerns. One thing that worries me as to the short scope you posted is I do not see where it will hold up to the recoil of teh 45/70. They say for Henry 22s and low power black powder cartridges. My scope is the long Malcolm and the price listed on your link, I can beat it with Hi/Lux. I would contact them and ask about the short Malcolm as to teh recoil of the 1895 45/70 if I were you. Just my 2 cents worth Peter. I do love teh long Malcolm I have though, a lot of fun to play with and VERY accurate.

Hello JJ.. yeah I had the same concerns as you - with the 45/70 cartridge that is, and I have mailed them. The short scope can indeed be mounted on the Marlin 1895CB, and it will stand up to the forces of recoil of the 45/70. There were also an extra ring to put on, that would strengthen the setup - recoilwise. So just for the heck of it, and to be safe - I guess that's going on as well. But I'm glad to hear that the scope isn't all bad - I know that they're modern scopes, modern lenses, nitrogenfilled, and all that. It just had the "old look", but while still being fairly modern. From what I have read and can judge from the pics and info I find, I do indeed think I'm going to buy that scope - but just would like to hear if anyone had any experience with them. I'm happy to hear from you and your experiences with the long model - the short can't be all bad. =o) Thanks.
